Our Wood Species

The right wood for your space

Douglas Fir

Beyond its pinkish-brown hue and rich wood grain, Douglas fir (BC Fir) is known for both its structural and aesthetic qualities. Native to western North America, it is a highly sought-after wood species valued for its mechanical performance, which exceeds that of many other softwoods.

White Pine

A softwood ranging in color from creamy white to yellow, white pine is the largest conifer in Eastern Canada. Its uniform grain helps minimize color variations within a single piece of wood.

Poplar/Aspen

Commonly known as aspen, poplar is a hardwood found throughout Quebec. Its very pale wood is creamy white with a subtle grain. Poplar is an excellent choice for a clean, minimalist look.

Eastern White Cedar

Known for its light, warm tone, Eastern white cedar is a lightweight, stable and naturally durable wood. Its resistance to moisture, insects and decay makes it a preferred choice for decks, porches and exterior cladding.

Western Red Cedar

Known for its natural resistance to decay*, Western red cedar features a distinctive reddish-brown color. Its durability makes it a popular choice for decks and porches.
*Decay-resistant material that naturally withstands moisture, fungi and insects.

Spruce

Valued for its light color and uniform grain, spruce is a lightweight, strong and versatile wood. Easy to work with, it is particularly well suited for timber framing, beams and interior paneling.

75 Years of Craftsmanship and a Passion for Wood

1950

Since 1950, the story of De Bois Blouin has been shaped by one passion: wood. Originally known as Scierie Blouin, the family business was founded on Île d’Orléans, where André Blouin offered log sawing services to local farmers. Over time, he passed on much more than a trade to his son Luc: a sense of rigour and deep respect for the material.

1976

In 1976, Luc Blouin took over the family sawmill. Thanks to his experience and vision, the company expanded its customer base and built a reputation for product quality and personal service. This marked a turning point: the small artisan sawmill gradually became a commercial business recognized for its expertise in wood processing.

1990

The following years were marked by growth. In 1990, the installation of a first lumber kiln for cabinetmaking opened new horizons. The arrival of a moulder then made it possible to turn dried lumber into finished products, broaden the product range and offer more complete solutions to customers.

2000

In 2000, Rémi Blouin joined the family business, becoming the third generation at the helm. His forward-looking vision took the company into new markets. Modern machinery, improved processes, building codes, new finishes and product customization all became levers that grew De Bois Blouin into a recognized expert in wood beams, timber frames and paneling.

A visionary, Rémi Blouin continued this evolution by acquiring a CNC timber-framing machine, also known as a joinery centre. De Bois Blouin thus became the first company in Quebec to own this latest-generation model. Working from 3D digital plans, this technology automates the cutting, drilling and preparation of solid wood pieces. It produces complex joints such as dovetails and mortise-and-tenons with millimetre precision. For the team, this investment marked a major step forward in manufacturing custom timber frames and ready-to-assemble structures.
